RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
October 2020 – September 2021
Postdoctoral Research Project, EHESS: “Gender-based violence in art schools: between reproduction and
denunciation”
This research project addresses the role of gender-based violence in art schools in the reproduction of gender order
and male domination in contemporary art. It uses quantitative and qualitative methods.
September 2013 – November 2019
Doctoral Research, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
Dissertation title: Artistes mais femmes. Formation, carrière et réputation dans l’art contemporain
Summary: Women artists are underrepresented at the highest levels of artistic, symbolic and economic reputation,
although they make up the majority of art school students as well as artists. Drawing on sociology of work, gender,
art and education, this PhD dissertation explains this paradox. It analyses the making of gender inequalities within
a very prestigious French art school and how these affect the entrance into an artistic career, survival in the
profession and access to reputation of its graduate in contemporary art. The joint analysis of quantitative data from
an artistic ranking (ArtFacts), biographical interviews and ethnographic observations sheds light on the gendered
construction of artistic careers. Whether it is during the recruitment by the art school, the selection in a studio,
student jobs, the invitation to exhibit one’s work or being represented by a gallery, women’s gradual disappearance
plays out in co-optation processes. At different stages in the career, the stigma of motherhood restricts their
employability and their heterosexualization limits opportunities for self-promotion. Access to the conventions of
the contemporary art world and integration into professional networks, particularly in the art market, are sexually
differentiated. Nevertheless, different social, economic, educational or institutional resources allow some women
to bypass the constraints weighing on women’s artistic careers, and to gain reputation.
September 2017 – December 2018
Member of the Research Project « Inégalités sexuées, de classe et de « race » dans les écoles d’art : rentre
reproduction et transgression ». Project financed by the GIS Institut du Genre du CNRS. Research Project
directed by Marie Buscatto, in collaboration with Marine Cordier, Joël Laillier, Véra Léon and Mathilde
Provansal.
Research Question: This research project explores the production of gendered differences in artistic careers by
looking at art schools in different art worlds (theatre, photography, visual arts, cinema, music, literature, circus).
Art schools play a paradoxical role in women’s artistic careers. Art schools may give women access to professional
artistic networks, enter and stay in an artistic profession and gain recognition. Artistic education and training are
a key moment for future women artists as they can develop their skills and be recognized as professional artists.
However, art schools remain places where gender inequalities are reproduced. A first objective of this scientific
project is to deepen our knowledge of the place of art schools in the making and transgression of gender differences
among aspiring artists. The production and the transgression of gender inequalities intersect other social or racial
inequalities. A second objective of this project is to think about the production and transgression of gendered,
social and racial differences in art school with an intersectional approach.
Contributions: My contributions were part of my doctoral research. I realized an ethnography of the selection of
the candidates at the entrance exam of a prestigious art school. I observed the interviews between the jury and the
candidates, and the jury’s deliberations. I constructed a database with the applications of the candidates and I did
a statistical analysis of it.

September 2011 – June 2012
Member of the Research Project “Genre et Sciences au Musée”, directed by Christine Détrez, École
Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
Research Question: The issue of the under-representation of girls in scientific disciplines and careers despite better
academic performance than boys on average, has been the subject of numerous works in the sociology of education
and the sociology of work, but has little been addressed by the sociology of culture. This research project analyzes
the effect of gender on the production of the scientific culture through the study of the exhibitions held at the Cité
des Sciences and at the Palais de la Découverte (Paris), and a varied corpus (cartoons, TV programs, textbooks,
magazines, etc.). A second part of the survey focuses on the reception of the scientific culture. Based on interviews,
it studies the relationship to the scientific culture of children and teenagers and it takes into account gender and
social class in the analysis.
Contribution: one observation of a scientific exhibition at the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie; analyzis of several
episodes of the cartoon “Il était une fois … la Vie”.
September 2008 – June 2011
Member of the Research Project “l’Atelier Poussin”, directed by Bernard Lahire, ENS de Lyon.
Research Question: This research project was initiated by Sylvie Ramond, Director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts
de Lyon, on the occasion of the museum’s acquisition of a painting by Nicolas Poussin for 17 million euros. In
1657, Nicolas Poussin painted a Flight to Egypt. The canvas then disappeared for several centuries before different
versions of the painting reappeared in the 1980’s. This research project aimed to reconstruct the trajectories of the
different versions of the painting, to analyze the competition between various actors for the recognition of artistic
and economic value of these canvases, and to reveal the beliefs and acts of social magic involved in the making of
a masterpiece.
Contribution: Interview with Agnès Cipriani, development manager of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon;
interview with Vincent Pomarède, chief of the painting department of the Musée du Louvre. Research and analysis
of documents regarding the different versions of the painting, at Northwestern University’s Library. This collective
research project was the basis of the following book: Ceci n’est pas qu’un tableau. Essai sur l’art, la domination,
la magie et le sacré, Bernard Lahire, La Découverte, Paris, 2015.
